Title: THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE - Part 1
Speaker: Rev Derek

FOUNDATION TEXT: Luke 24:13-15

3 timeless principles we must observe for the sake of love

1. Do not introduce a third party into your relationship. Luke 24:13 notes that two people (Cleopas and his wife) were walking to Emmaus. There was no third party in their company.

Every healthy courtship or marriage relationship involves only two people of the opposite sex. The moment a third party comes into the picture, disaster looms e.g. When David came into Uriah and Bathsheba's marriage, disaster struck.

NB: Before you say I do, find out if your would-be partner involves a third party in your friendship. Determine if your  friend been able to dissociate him/herself physically, emotionally and mentally from his/her ex.

Note: Beware of what you may consider as a small sin. Guard against the temptation of committing what u consider a one-off sin because

* Sin will take you further than you want(ed) to go.
David stopped at nothing until he orchestrated the death of Uriah just to cover up his sin with Bathsheba.

* Sin will cost you more than you want(ed) to pay.
Because David caused the death of Uriah to cover up his sins, the sword never departed from his house.

* Sin will keep you longer than you want(ed) to stay.

David probably intended to have a brief moment of pleasure with Uriah's wife, but he remained in that sinful condition for nearly a year. Proof: His repentance came only after Bathsheba had given birth; and even that was not without God's initiative. David confessed his sin after God sent Nathan to tactfully confront, expose and rebuke him.

2. Do not allow important dates and days to pass uncelebrated. Luke 24:13 calls our attention to the fact that it was the first day of the week. That day was a very special day. It was Easter - Resurrection Sunday. The first Easter; the first of its kind in the history of the human race. Cleopas and his wife decided to do something significant. They left Jerusalem (a place of pain, disappointment, unfulfilled promises and expectations) and walked 7 miles to their home at Emmaus. That was quite significant - moving away from the place of pain and rejection on a special day like Easter. That was how they chose to mark the occasion.

Important dates like birthdays, anniversaries, valentine days, etc. must be marked and celebrated in every healthy relationship. So before you say I do, find out the value your would-be beloved places on days and dates you consider sacred, special or important. If you're already married, learn to celebrate anniversaries, special occasions, and events.

3. Ensure that you are both walking in the same direction. In every healthy relationship, the two persons must be committed to the same principles. If you're committed to the principle of no sex before marriage and s/he is not, the relationship will suffer casualties.

In our foundation text, both Cleopas and his wife were walking in the same direction (v13). The Bible declares "How can two walk together unless they agree." Agreement between would-be and married couples is a key ingredient.

These are the three things we do for the sake of love. Let's observe these timeless principles and out relationships will be exemplary.

Daily Prayer Point.  Sovereign Lord, Great and mighty God from whom all blessings flow, and giver of all good things, we praise you. Yesterday Father, we celebrated mothers and gave you thanks for their love. Today, Father, we lift before you all women who are married and are seeking the blessing of the fruit of the womb. Gracious Father just as word says "you visited Sarah" and "remembered Hannah" , so look down in mercy, hear the prayers of all these women. Lift up the light of your countenance upon them, O Lord, let your face shine upon them and make them joyful mother of children in Jesus Name. Psa113:9KJV.
